Mobile phones that incorporate a full Qwerty keypad were once the handset of choice for your typical business person wanting to compose and edit e mails whilst on the move. Recently the phones have been adopted by a younger generation who use instant messaging services such as MSN and Blackberry Messenger. We take a look at the new Blackberry 9900 Bold Touch, the new newest release from the brand that made the full keypad famous and compare it to the HTC Chacha, one of the newest phones sporting the Qwerty design.
Taking a look at both handsets for the first time it is the Blackberry device that really grabs your attention. In terms of design the 9900 Bold Touch is the better looking phone. It looks very much like previous Blackberrys with a small display occupying the top half of the chassis and the full keypad dominating the bottom section. The individual keys are a squared shape which keeps the keypad looking very neat and compact. This layout is in contrast to the more rounded key design on the Chacha which looks less premium and certainly occupies more space. The Blackberry is also a very flat design whereas the HTC positions the screen at a slight angle to the keypad. We prefer the shape of the Blackberry not only for its looks but also from a practical point of view as the phone is likely to fit more comfortably into a small pocket or bag. The 9900 Bold Touch continues to outshine the Chacha when we move away from looks and examine the technical specification of both models. Perhaps the most important area of any phone is its display and both models in this comparison offer a high standard of screen. The Blackberry comes out on top though thanks to a high resolution of 640 x 480 being packed into the models slightly larger 2.8 inch screen. The HTC offers a respectable 480 x 320 resolution on its 2.6 inch display. When we break these two figures down into a pixels per inch rating the Blackberry offers 285 as compared to the 221 available on the HTC.
A vital aspect of the modern smartphone is the procesor power that is on offer. With many phones performing multiple tasks and functions a good procesor chip is necessary to enable the phone to perform these both quickly and efficiently. The Blackberry Bold 9900 really does impress in this area thanks to its Qualcom 8655 processor. At 1.2 Ghz it certainly offers plenty of power and is a full 400Mhz faster than the chip offered on the HTC Chacha. The speed of the Blackberry is also aided by the Adreno 205 graphics processing unit which helps to ensure that complex pages and images do not slow the phone down. The processing power of the Bold Touch is matched by the phones impressive storage capacity. There is plenty of room for all manner of multi media files thanks to an internal capacity of 8GB. This should prove more than adequate for the average user but should you be running a little low on space you always have the option of adding a micro SD card. This phone supports card sizes up to 32GB, giving a total potential storage capacity of 40GB. The Chacha does not fair so well in this area as it only offers 512MB of built in storage but the presence of a micro SD slot is a saving grace.
The Blackberry 9900 Bold Touch really is the Qwerty handset for a new generation. A great blend of power, style and performance makes this one of the most impressive handsets released so far in 2011.
